I thought that since we’ve been deprived of the QotD on Vox, I’d start doing a weekly question. You can post an answer in the comments or on your blog and be as serious or funny as you want. Feedback and other question ideas are welcome.
QotW for 9/12-9/18:
Everyone has seen those “All I Need to Know About Life I Learned ____ (in kindergarten, from a pet, etc.)” posters. Name ten things you have learned about life from TV.
Ahoy Cap’n–
A few VOX users really liked the Journal Jar group Cimmy and I created as an alternative to the QotD.
It lives on: VOX Journal Jar Group In Exile
We will add this QotW to that blog. Please, come read. You are free to use the questions we are using, but we ask that you use our format.
I never about the group but will certainly take a look. I just made a suggestion about doing something like it and, well, here I am posting this to see what happens
What I’ve learned from television is:
- women have a mysterious place ‘down there’, and it can cause discomfort and embarrassment if it doesn’t smell like lavender or summer rain
- fat men are funny; fat women are bathetic
- noone on TV watches TV
- “reality shows” ain’t
- Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy is proof that God loves us and wants us happy
- nobody says it, but “The Civil War” was the pinnacle of Ken Burns’s career as a documentary filmmaker.
- it is more convenient to drive to a McDonald’s, wait in the (car)line, and process a transaction than it is put bread in a toaster
- nobody dares tell her, but Tina Fey, while a darn funny writer, is nowhere close to being a funny actress – heck, I’m not sure she even qualifies as actress
- removing whiskers from a man’s face requires more engineering than the Apollo project
- nature programs are taking the whole “nature, red in teeth and claw” to snuff film level.
*gasp* Reality shows aren’t real?! Why did you have to ruin it for me?
#7 made me snicker
- Cookies are good for you (Sesame street)
- Stoats are loud (Animals of Farthing Wood)
- Norse mythology is fun (Huset med det rare i)
- Zoologists have the coolest job in the world (Sir David/BBC)
- Police cars are clever, and can talk (but only in odd dialects) (Pelle Politibil)
- Barney the friendly dinosaur may have the most annoying show tune in the world, unless that honour is held by My Little Pony
- Don’t talk to strangers, unless they are dressed as Muppets
- Swedish kids have all the fun (Pippi Longstocking, Ronja the Robbers daughter, The Lionhearts, Emil)
- When the news anchor warns against strong scenes, change the channel. It will be beyond horrible.
- Don’t ever, ever watch Animal Planet early on a sunday morning after a night of partying, they will show animals that have been cruelly treated, and you will cry.
Cookies are good for you! (in moderate amounts.)
I always loved the Pippi books, never watched the cartoon..
pfft, not the Pippi cartoons: But these! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R2KUHLczP0 (I only found some compilations of songs right now, for some reason..)
ps: we seem to have our ‘hood in common, thus you must be otterly cool
I’ll add you to my list if you want, but I need your username then- is it capnstephel?
Oh, live action! That must have been fun to watch.
Maybe I could say that I’m arrrrtterly cool? So then you’re one cool cat? Hehe! And sure, you can add me. You have the right user name
- Always check the back seat of the car; that’s where the kidnapper/killer is hiding.
- Barney and the Teletubbies should be killed with fire.
- Bodily fluids glow under UV (actually useful when you have cats).
- Jim Henson was an amazing genius
- people on ‘reality’ shows are “not here to make friends”
- there’s apparently still a lot to be said about WWII
- David Attenborough is teh awsum
- perkiness is important for women
- you can blow things up for Science!
- TiVo is the best.thing.evar
I’ve been wondering what would happen if they threw in a “reality” show contestant that was totally laid back. How long would they last?
Yeah Mythbusters and Jim Henson!
Hey. That’s SIR Awesome David Attenborough.
Oh. Here is my answer, posted at the Journal Jar blog.
So… your question was added, as I said it would be. Thanks for the inspiration and material, and apologies if my earlier post seemed rude or harsh.
I will go take a look. Thanks for participating. Your earlier comment did seem a little terse, but it can hard to interpret someone’s tone. *shrug* So it goes, right?
It goes well.
I guess I felt impatient for a moment to promote the blog, especially as it had been a very successful VOX Group. But then I remembered that your question was excellent material for that blog, and figured I should leave a link and my thanks.
I wasn’t trying to step on anyone’s toes. Like I said above, I just made a suggestion and we decided to see what would happen.
I’m glad you liked the question though.
I have an idea: I’m probably going to do another next week since I got a fair amount of answers this week, but I’ll put a link in to your group for people that want to answer more questions. Sound good?
Sounds good, even gracious. You have my thanks again.
And you know, I suspect it may be a case of different neighborhoods, different activities. I for one never knew about the Journal Jar Group on Vox, but was in a group of people who frequently made up our own sort of mocking versions of Vox’s QotD and such. So this will give us all a chance to see what other folks do/did.
That too
Yep, I was part of the QotD? Group as well, but it got tiresome after a while to simply parody every bad question. I found out Daisy was writing these questions (at the time), and I did tell her some of them could have been more inclusive.
The Journal Jar idea was Cimmy’s, and you’re right, it never ventured very far from our Neighborhoods. But it was a real relief to start it up because many of the questions were pleasant and easy to answer (as Doug/Almost Wisconsin told us). We decided after a while that taking the initiative for a positive tone was a nice alternative.
ooo
I saw this on Lurker’s wp and posted some.
I shall go look!
Awesome! I answered this QOTW over on my blog, here.
Great idea, CapnStephel! Thanks for posting a QOTW!
Nice! I’ll go take a look. Thank Red for giving me posting POWAH!
How did you do that…..make a post here on this page?? Are you one of the all powerful admins??
Geeeeeze….this is so cool!!
[I can even edit your comments!]
I’m not quite all powerful, but I am at least fairly powerful! Bwahahahaha!
I’d like to join up on this! can I add you to my subscriptions?
You can certainly join! Add the Vox Diaspora to your subscriptions because any future QotWs will be posted here
